The end of the Mike Omeara Show
So I have been getting a lot of hits and people emailing me about the Mike Omeara Show. For those who were not aware, the show is no more. On July 17th, Mike Omeara and crew said their goodbyes. Their show was abruptly pulled after WJFK switched formats to be yet another sports radio station. All the old shows on WJFK were pulled including Big O and Dukes.
Mike had this to say on the show:
We are done at WJFK. It has been a nice little run for us…
We really felt we were hitting our stride…
Unfortunately in my over 20-year career in radio, this has never happened before.
… As best I can tell you, we are going to be working behind-the-scenes to find a new home for the Mike O’Meara Show…
It is very very frustrating and because of that we are all going to take a breather and reevaluate.
…I move forward and I really do believe that things do happen for a reason.
As far as the future goes, Mike Omeara is tied up in a no-compete clause with CBS Radio until December and its highly likely he will return to radio at that time – in Florida. Rumor has it that Robb is still working at the station handling the Best Of segments for Westwood Syndication(which has also been pulled) until the end of the month. Beth Ann apparently is in real estate. Buzz(real name Michael J Elston) has been busy however. He has landed a gig as a writer for The Huffington Post. I have heard nothing on Joe Ardinger though.
It really is a shame as Mike Omeara and the Don and Mike Show have played a huge part of my life having not missed a episode in probably atleast 5 years. Sadly, rumor also has it there is no possibility of Don and Mike reuniting on air.

I leave work now and there is nothing to listen to on the way home. It’s such a bummer. I really miss Mike and his posse. Don’t listen to the new sports show.

Ya it’s a real shame to think when we lost “The Don& Mike show”& MIke O’meara show—we lost the David Lettermen& Jay Leno& Spike Jones sound effects& better than Rich Little impressions & Abbott& Costello& Martin & Lewis of radio of our current ERA and another small piece of our american culture—Their show was really something unique/ rare& special and consistently funny for 20 year run they had.I had never heard of a radio show like that before I found it in 1992 in VA. . I had heard of Stern & had seen his show on WOR NY Tv but there was nothing like the Don & mike show at that time where I’m from in N/W Pa..It reminded me of listening late night to KDKA in PGH. to when the wack pack caller groupies called in. I can’t wait to hear soon when a little struggling radio station or network who wants a quick easy fast fix climb up the ratings ladder picks up their show.”it’s areal no brainer -NO cons just pros to think about when you land them-.If I was aprogram director I won’t hesitate for second about signing them up. Then the Program Director just has to sit back& relax because that show is “MONEY IN the bank”with instant fan base of 20 yrs.& instant put your station name on the map recognition(radio advertisers have to be missing the sales potential $ mega bucks from that)-they say history repeats itself so well success for the “Rob& mike show”& crew —–That gives us something to look forward to in December!!!

i was listening to don and mike’s debut show on wava on my drive to work. they had replaced charlie and harrigan. don boasted to the other radio shows in the DC area, in the words of nikita kruschef of the then soviet union….”we will bury you”…..that was about six am in the morning……and they delivered…….consistently, every day for over 20 yrs. God bless them!

Why is there no chance of a Don & Mike reunion?
Is there a rift between the 2 funny men?

I cant believe that they took Mike off the air. Personally, I was loving the new mike show and liked it even better than when he had Don. And now there is Dukes and Lavar(larve) arrington. I like Dukes, but lavar is unbarrable to listen to. He is a total idiot and cant speak and how many times is he gonna use the word “BRO”. I really hope mike comes back and goes to the same time (3-7) shift. Cause i know that I will be listening to him.
I love the Junkies and actually like Mike wise and Holden cushner, but i cant stand listening to Lavar. HE IS A TOTAL IDIOT!!

The removal of the show was sudden and did not seem to be a smart move. Right off the bat your gonna drop the female listeners and a fairly sizable percent of the current male listeners. I listened to the new sports shows for about two weeks then had to change the station.

The new shows are ok:
Mike Wise is a bit dry and boring…the exact opposite of Big O & Dukes. Chad and LaVar are not too bad, but Chad is a shadow of his former quality, and I’m not sure what LaVar is going to talk about when football season ends. Holden Kushner = amateur open mike hour for sports radio.
Ultimately, the lousy season for the Redskins, coupled with all of th controversial treatment of fans coming out of Ashburn/FedEx Feild has made this the perfect time for a non-Snyder affiliated sports station to emerge…
I can’t imagine that (even if they find something to talk about after football season ends) becoming the top sports talk station in the area could be as ratings heavy as the old talk line-up. Surely it wouldn’t generate the loyal listeners of the past. I think the station is surviving mostly on the Junkies loyal listeners, and those who just haven’t found anything better to listen to….yet.
